A 13 person committee has been put together by the Biden administration to research reparations for slavery. The Bill, H.R. 40, is to study whether the descendants of slaves should receive compensation, and how much, and how.
There are an estimated 40 million black descendants of slaves in the US today. However, that number can fluctuate greatly based on how they decide to define ‘descendant’. With trillions of dollars at stake, everyone can and will find linage to slavery in order to grab a piece of the pie for themselves.
Biden is obviously in full support of the bill and even mentioned as much last Tuesday when he met with the Black Caucus.
However, because this bill is just for a committee to begin researching reparations, there is no guarantee that Congress would ever pass anything even if the committee deems it necessary. The house Democrat majority has shrunk to just 2, with a handful of Democrats siding with Republicans lately as they fight for power from their own party. The Senate has an even smaller chance of passing anything and the fight there is even tighter between Democrats and Republicans.
