Brianna McNeal is the 100-meter hurdles champion bringing home the Gold for team USA. This year will be different.
McNeal has been suspended recently after qualifying for this years Olympics in Tokyo. She is claiming that an abortion is the reason she was suspended.
Officially she was not suspended for having an abortion, but for violating anti-doping policies. Olympic athletes must undergo scheduled doping tests to maintain eligibility. In January, McNeal missed her scheduled test. A drug tester went to her door and McNeal did not answer for her test. The tester also phoned McNeal and got no response still. It wasn’t until 18 days later that that McNeal was asked to explain the missed appointment by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
At this point she told the Unit that she had undergone “a surprise medical procedure” that left her heavily medicated and in bed. To prove her procedure had taken place she submitted a not from the clinic for an unknown medical procedure.
But here is where it gets interesting…
She changed the date on the doctors note to be 1 day later, which is closer to her missed drug test than the actual procedure. The Athletics Integrity Unit noticed the changed date and asked for more documents, and McNeal changed the dates on those as well. The investigators asked for more proof after noticing the dates changed again and got the official documents seeing that the date was in fact changed.
McNeal claims that she got the abortion so she should compete in the Olympic games, and now because of the Abortion, she cannot compete at all for 5 years due to her suspension.
To be clear, McNeal is not being suspended or even suspected of doping. She is being suspended purely on policy issues. She only missed this one test in the previous 12 months.
The the punishment fit the crime? What do you think?
